Places To Ride
By becoming a member of the NBLA
you will be invited to participate in area
Show and Go rides. These are 'members only' rides that highlight the beautiful "Hand Shake" trails of Newtown
that land owners graciously allow us to use.
There are some great opportunities for horseback riding in CT State Park properties; some of the best are along
the various trails like Larkin or the Air Line trail. In addition, there are areas open in several State Forests
for equestrian activity. There are also designated areas for horse camping at Pachaug and Natchaug Forests. Please
remember to observe proper trail etiquette while enjoying these locations. Check
the websites listed below for more specific information.
Connecticut
Airline State Park Trail • Hebron, CT
The Air Line Rail Trail is located in eastern Connecticut, and stretches more than 50 miles from near
the Connecticut River to the Massachusetts border. The Air Line Rail Trail North section is 27 miles long,
from Windham to Putnam. This trail, though largely undeveloped, is used by people on horseback, hikers,
cross country skiers and mountain bikers. No motor vehicles are allowed on the trail. The surface is
mainly ballast and gravel, with trap rock in some short sections. The section from the Goodwin State
Forest Conservation Center to Route 44 in Pomfret is smooth, scenic and suitable for equestrians.
